Key InformationWear loose fitting comfortable clothes without metal fasteners on the day of your scan. MRI scans usually take around 30 minutes to an hour. Some people can find they feel a little claustrophobic in the scanner, if you are not keen on confined spaces please let us know before you come for your scan so we can make sure you are as comfortable and relaxed as possible. The radiographer will be able to see you clearly during the scan and if you need anything you only have to ask. |

MRI
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an innovative technique that can be used to view your body in may different planes. It is a non-invasive procedure that doesn't use ionising radiation but instead uses electrical currents and radio waves. The detailed images it produces vary according to the tissue that is examined and its physical and chemical properties.
MRI scanning can be used to accurately detect, localise and assess the extent and character of disease in almost all parts of your body.
Our Radiographers
Cornwall House Clinic has a team of highly qualified specialist radiographers with over 20 years experience in MRI scanning so you can be assured of a high quality service.
The Scan
At Home
For an MRI scan you must be referred by your GP, consultant or other specialist such as a physiotherapist. Once we receive a referral letter we will send you an appointment letter and some more information about how to prepare for your scan, what to bring with you and what to leave at home. It is important that you read any information we send you carefully so you can check what you need to do before you get to us, for example you may need to avoid food before your scan.
At Cornwall House Clinic
Our radiographer will explain the procedure of the scan to you and answer any questions you might have. You will be asked to complete a safety questionnaire before the scan. The radiographer will go through this with you to make sure you are suitable for the procedure. MRI scanning involves the use of a powerful magnet and for safety reasons we are unable to scan people with pacemakers, metal fragments in their eyes, surgical clips or certain other types of implants. You will also need to make sure you don't have any metal objects on you before you are scanned including credit cards, jewellery, keys and spectacles. You may also be asked to remove your make-up. You will be given a locker in which to place your valuables whilst you undergo the MRI scan.
The radiographer will then make sure you are comfortably positioned on the scanner couch. You will need to lie still during the scan so making sure you are comfortable at the start will really help.
The scan is produced by rapidly switching electrical currents and radio waves on and off. This creates loud, rhythmic knocking sounds and we recommend that you wear the ear protection we provide for your comfort and safety. You will be able to listen to some music during your scan to help you relax.
The radiographer will be able to see you through a glass screen throughout the scan and will be able to talk to you. If you need to get our attention we will give you a buzzer to hold during the scan.
When scanning some parts of your body we might need to give you small injection, usually into a vein near your elbow, to help the scanner to get a better picture of your internal tissues.
The Results
We understand that waiting for the results of a test can be a worrying time. Our aim is to get accurate results back to you as quickly as possible.
After your scan the images we have gathered will be studied by one of our consultant radiologists who will send a report to the doctor who referred you for the scan within four working days. You will need to make arrangements with them to discuss your results.
